SomeOne Special

This week’s “Saugus Some-one Special” features a woman whose prestige is known throughout Saugus High School yet her great deeds sometimes do not reach the minds of the people outside of the school. Mrs. Jane Osgood has been a teacher at Saugus High School. She is the head of the school’s English Department and is also has been the advisor for the high school student council for thirteen years.

Saugus SomeOne Special
Danielle Strangie and Mrs. Marra

Three years ago, Danielle Strangie was a second grade student in Mrs. Marra’s second grade class. At that time, she organized a collection for cancer during the “Breakfast with Santa.” She helped collect more than $80.

This year, Danielle took her charitable efforts a step further and organized a “Helping Hands Day” at the Waybright School. Through this year’s Helping Hands Day she raised approximately $184.00. As she did three years ago, Danielle presented the money to Mrs. Marra in her sister’s name. Danielle and Mrs. Marra agreed to donate the money to the Reid Sacco Fund.

We thank Danielle for her sense of community and for her concerted effort toward the fight against cancer.

There are those moments in life when a single occurrence makes a whole community proud. One such occurred happened just last week when the Saugus Pop Warner A Squad Cheerleaders preformed at the National Championship in Disney World. While it is noteworthy that the Team was the North Shore, Eastern Mass and New England Champions and placed second in the entire Nation by a single point, it is the community spirit and pride of the Team that was noticed by many in Florida. Over 100 Teams from around the country compete in all the divisions combined and all the Teams walk around with their Town’s name on their back. No Team in the entire competition represented their community in a more positive way then Saugus. 20 Cheerleaders, coaches, Team Mom’s and Directors showed tremendous enthusiasm, pride and spirit during the week and it was noticed by many. People from Iowa, Texas, New Jersey and every State commented that the Saugus Team cared as much about the other teams as they did themselves. While some would have dwelled on missing first place by a single point the Saugus Cheerleaders looked and acted like the champions they are and continued their time in Disney enjoying the weather and parks. Each member of the team did Saugus proud with their accomplishments and their strong sense of community in representing Saugus in front of the entire country, for that they are all truly SomeONE Special.

Father John Mulloy, a man of God, a man of the people, “Someone Special in Saugus.”
Father Mulloy personifies a member of the clergy who goes beyond being the pastor of a single church, in his case the Blessed Sacrament Church. Because of him the word ecumenical has become the norm in Saugus. Years ago Protestants would never think of attending a Catholic church and Catholics would never visit a Protestant church. There was a definite separation of religions. Because of people such as Father Mulloy this no longer exists. He is a person who promotes the common worship among all religions. Several times a year ecumenical services are held with people of all religions coming together to worship. In a recent article he wrote for a local newspaper Father Mulloy talks of the new churches that have joined our community with the inference that it doesn’t matter how one worships as long as they do worship and believe in God and work together to do good things. Father Mulloy is “Someone Special” who has brought the people of our Town of Saugus closer together for a common good

If Webster’s Dictionary published the name Ron Barresi its definition would say, “hard working, unending dedication to others, never quitting and putting all others above yourself.” For decades, Ron Barresi has looked out for the town in his position at the DPW and the youth of Saugus in many ways, most notably with Saugus Babe Ruth. Many say Saugus would not have a Babe Ruth program if it were not for Ronny and that may well be true. Ronny spent countless hours with the program over the years and was thrilled to be honored at World Series Park with his lovely wife. He has been active in many organizations including the Saugus Boosters Club where he brought energy, spirit and care for the kids.

This past year, Ronny retired from the Saugus Department of Public Works after decades. Working in the hot summer days and cold winter nights, Ronny was never one to complain as he took a personal interest in all that he did. His peers would often cite his example when asked how they withstood a long cold night of repairing a water break or plowing. Ronny is a friend to all because of his warm heart, care for others and dedication to Saugus.

In addition to his dedication and hard work for Saugus, Ronny and his wife raised a great family that no doubt learned much from a man who has done so much for so many. “I am proud and honored to call Ronny a friend and to have been one of many who learned from his example. His is the embodiment of Saugus Community Spirit and we have all benefited from his care for others and what he has given. Because of Ronny, Saugus is a better place, for that and so many reasons Ronny is SomeONE Special,” said Mike Kelleher.
