On Sunday, March 30, the Saugus Democratic Town Committee received a special visit from U.S. Senator John F. Kerry.
The senator spent about an hour outlining some of the bills and activities he has been involved with over the past several months. Many of the committee members queried him about the state of the union, education, the economy, and, especially, the Iraq war. Senator Kerry was forthcoming and frank about his positions and what steps he feels should be taken in these and other areas. He told of the need to change our income tax structure to help the middle class and the importance of developing a major infrastructure policy in the U.S. He stressed the importance of energy independence and the need to create renewable and alternative energy sources. Other topics of concern were education funding, trade policy, immigration policy and media consolidation
Afterwards, many members were able to speak one-on-one with the senator. It was a very informative and important meeting, with the senator being very warm and sympathetic to those who are veterans, and those who have family in the service. The committee also elected its officers for the next term.
